Getting Around in Bandung Downtown

Bandung Downtown is one of the hottest tourist destinations in West Java, the third largest Indonesian province. It is a bustling, cosmopolitan metropolis situated among tea plantations and volcanoes in the north-eastern corner of Java. It is known for art and colonial architecture, lively university-city feel and - due to its 626m elevation - relatively cooler climate. Bandung is a great shopping destination, with boutiques clustered close to Jalan Riau and Jalan Setiabudi in the Dago district and malls located near Tegal Avenue and Sukhumvit Road in Central Bandung.

A trip to Bandung Downtown will not fail to take your breath away. The city is a buzzing hub of activity with the streets lined with stalls selling everything from local handicrafts to antiques, traditional clothing to modern electronics. The city is divided into districts, starting with the Old City that is lined with narrow cobbled alleys and winding its way up to central Bandung. There are also old-fashioned hotels dotted around the city offering good food and drink, as well as ample shopping options. A night out in Bandung is never complete without visiting the many bars, discos and restaurants that dot the city.

Bandung's climate ranges from the hot and humid to the cool and dry. Most areas of the city to experience some degree of humidity during the summer months but there are some cool spots located around Jalan Setiabudi or Jalan Rialu in the central part of the city. The climate of the rest of the city is mostly dry, except for the city's northern region, which is known to experience extreme cold at certain times of the year.

In terms of nightlife, Bandung Downtown has a wide variety to offer from bars and discos to cafes, museums and restaurants. There is plenty of shopping in the area, including the famous shopping district of Bandung Central where tourists can find everything from clothing to jewelries.

You will find a great number of malls in central Bandung and the majority of them are open twenty-four hours a day. The shopping in this part of the city is fantastic, but the prices are usually much higher than the rest of the city. This means it is not possible to buy everything in central Bandung Downtown. English is the local language in central Bandung and many of the shops are open in both Indonesian and English. Tourists can easily get around the city using the metro or bus. There are two major airports serving Bandung: the Jakarta International Airport (JAT) and Bandung International Airport (BAI). The airport is located on the north-east side of town and is served by the SRI.
