Malang Downtown, Jakarta - The Oldest of Indonesian Cities

Malang is an ancient city on the East Java coast, in Indonesia. Treasured by the Dutch as a haven for their moderate highland climate, the old city holds much of its traditional architectural architecture. The Balai Kuta building mixes Dutch and Indonesian styles, and large mansions line the streets, Jalan Besar Iden Ijen. Further to the north is the Mt. Bromo, another volcano with excellent hiking paths.

For many years, Malang was one of the biggest centers of silk-textiles in Indonesia, exporting silk items to European and Asian markets. There are many museums, temples, historic buildings, and markets to be visited. The most important street in Malang, Jalan Besar Iden, has a small coffee shop/museum that houses a large collection of antique items. If you visit early in the morning, you will find several vendors selling local produce, such as bananas, oranges, lemons and lemongrass.

The downtown area of Malang consists mainly of small houses with high walls and arched windows. Some of these have narrow verandas in front, while others have wide wooden balconies. These homes and balconies are surrounded by tall trees and large rocks. The gardens are filled with flowers, which are mostly in season from May to October. This is also the time when making fruit trees bloom, offering the best fruit in the country. The markets are also bustling with local people, who sell almost everything from jewelry to handicrafts.

Malang is well connected to the rest of Indonesia via rail. There are also buses that travel between Jakarta and Malang. There are many minivans that travel up to the top of Mount Bromo. The train station is a popular spot for tourists to stay. You can book accommodations in advance by contacting the station staff.

A day trip to the mountains is not complete without stopping at the famous Mt. Bromo. This volcano has an observation tower, with panoramic views of the surrounding area. It is easy to reach, and is less crowded than the other volcanoes on the way to Bali.

For those who like to have a longer stay, you can visit the villages of Bangga, Bantung, Manggarai and Banggawa, known for their seafood. All of these villages are part of an archipelago of islands, located between Malang and Borobudur, and offer great diving, boating, hiking, and fishing activities. Other activities include horse riding and elephant riding, and a traditional dance performance.
